The Executive Governor of Borno State, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has ordered the integration of vocational skills in over 2,775 tsangaya centers, also known as Almajiri Schools in the state and Islamiyya schools in the state.
The Governor gave the order on Tuesday when he received an update on the validation and registration of the informal schools from the governing council of Arabic and Tsangaya Education Board which was inaugurated in November 2020.
The governing council met with the governor at the Government House in Maiduguri, the state capital, where Khalifa Aliyu Ahmed Abdulfathi, the board chairman, briefed the governor about the developments achieved so far in the process of reforming the almajiri education system in the state.
As part of their findings, he said the validation and registration of Tsangaya Schools were conducted across the 27 local government areas of the state except for Kala-Balge, Guzamala, and Abadam.
According to the chairman, the board has registered 2, 775 Tsangaya centers with 12, 309 teachers and 224,068 pupils, 57.5% (128,789) are day learners while 43.4% (97,279) are boarding learners.
He added that the board also identified 451 Islamiyya schools operating across the state.
While responding, the governor said with the introduction of vocational education, numeracy, and literacy skills the issue of street begging and the number of out-of-school children will be drastically reduced.
He said the Borno State government intends to streamline the informal and formal education systems to qualify Tsangaya school graduates to be admitted into colleges and universities.
