President Buhari’s spokesman, Femi Adesina, said that the Buhari administration has made a big difference in Nigeria’s security over the past few years.

In his weekly article released today via his official Facebook handle, titled “From The Inside,” Mr. Adesina noted that the president had taken “the war to the enemies of the country.”

His article partly reads, “nobody can deny that the past decade has been challenging, even traumatic, for Nigeria in terms of security. Since the Boko Haram insurgency started in 2009, hundreds of thousands of people have been killed, towns, cities, and villages sacked, and an untold number of people displaced.

“As if things were not bad enough, the insurgency was later joined by banditry. Kidnapping for ransom, militancy, secessionist agitations, cult killings, internecine clashes, ritual murders, cattle rustling, farmer-herder clashes, and more; crimes everywhere.”

He added that Nigeria was lucky to have a president like Muhammadu Buhari who had seen enough to fight battles like the ones the country had faced.

“It was very tough, but we were also lucky. The country was being led by a tested and accomplished retired military officer, Muhammadu Buhari, who had seen many battles. He took the war to the enemies of the country, and like every endeavor in life, there were high and low points.”

“There were times it seemed the country was being overrun, and that the battle would never be won. Bombs going off like firecrackers, people being killed and maimed in scores, communities being wiped out fear and foreboding everywhere. But our leader stayed the course, and despite the caviling and criticism, President Buhari kept his eyes on the ball. And today, things are better. Far, far better than they have ever been on the security front. The auguries are quite good,” he said.

Mr. Buhari became president in 2015 in a fierce election against the incumbent, Goodluck Jonathan.

One of the major promises Buhari made to Nigerians was to improve the security of the country, which appeared to be daunting as attacks, killings, and kidnappings became quotidian during his years as president.

However, as many communities have been ravaged by bandits, Nigerians lamented the situation, which saw thousands of people killed and many more thousands kidnapped.
