The Plateau State Police Command said that it will prosecute a woman arrested in the state for allegedly beating her 11-year-old maid, Margareth, to death.
Margareth is said to have suffered injuries as a result of being beaten by her housemaster, Mrs. Nnemeka Nwachukwu, who left her unattended for days. She was assisted by Mrs. Nwachukwu’s neighbor, who took her to a private hospital in Vom for treatment. Later, Margareth was taken to the Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH) because her injuries were said to be critical. The teenager was pronounced dead at JUTH.
DSP Alfred Alabo, the police public relations officer (PPRO) for the Plateau State Command, confirmed the incident and said that the woman had been arrested. He also said that the woman involved had been handed over to the state Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for a thorough investigation and possible prosecution.
According to Plateau State National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Director, Mrs. Grace Pam, the victim was trafficked from Kebbi State and sent to Jos to work as a housemaid.
Mrs. Grace said, “I got wind of the death of the housemaid through my source in JUTH. I went there and confirmed the incident myself. My office has discovered that the victim was trafficked from Kebbi State and handed over to her guardians in Jos as a housemaid.”
