Bauchi and Gombe States will be the first to produce oil in northeast Nigeria as President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday inaugurates the Kolmani Oil Prospecting Lease (OPL) 809 and 810 at the Kolmani field site located in Bauchi and Gombe States.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) declared the discovery of oil in “commercial volumes at the Kolmani River Well II” in October 2019, when President Buhari conducted his first oversight of the drilling operation.

President Buhari arrived at the Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa International Airport in Bauchi in the early hours of Tuesday and was received by Governors Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, Simon Lalong of Plateau State, and Babagana Zulum of Borno State.

Other dignitaries present at the Kolmoni field site for the inauguration were Governor Mohammed Badaru Abubakar of Jigawa State, President of the Senate, Ahmed Lawal, the Honourable Minister of Digital Economy, Professor Isa Aliyu Pantami, and APC Presidential Candidate, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, amongst others.

Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Mohammed, was reported to have said that the oil and gas exploration at Kolmani River in Alkaleri Local Government Area of the state by the NNPC would ‘reverse the narrative of poverty and underdevelopment’ in the state.
