Former Governor of Ogun State, Gbenga Daniel, has explained his decision to request the Ogun State Government to halt his pensions and allowances as a former governor.

He said he took the step to avoid receiving double payment, for he had returned to public service after a 12-years.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, the senator representing Ogun East Senatorial District, highlighted a court judgment obtained by SERAP, which emphasized that citizens should not be entitled to double payment, particularly if they hold another public office.

“I remember there was indeed a court judgement which SERAP got basically saying that people should not be entitled to double payment, especially if you now have another kind of public office. But even before then, naturally, a human being should not be entitled to double remuneration.

“However, even before the court judgment, I believed it was only fair that a person should not receive two sets of remuneration.” He added.

In another development, Gbenga expressed intention to revisit the legal provisions regarding the matter once he concludes his tenure in the Senate.

He, however, urged other public officials to lead by example in order to enhance societal values.
