Members of the House of Representatives are calling for an increase in their salaries and allowances as part of measures to alleviate hardships caused by the removal of fuel subsidy and the current economic conditions in the country.
The demand arose during a meeting held on July 11, which was preceded by an executive session during plenary to address the concerns raised by the lawmakers regarding their salaries and allowances.
The representatives expressed dissatisfaction with their current remuneration, citing the inability of their salaries and allowances to meet the demands of their positions.
Some members said they resorted to taking loans due to the delayed payment of their salaries and allowances.
News Agency of Nigeria reported that a lawmaker, who preferred to remain anonymous, dismissed rumors suggesting that the discussion centered around immediate monetary benefits.
Instead, the lawmakers emphasized the need for a review of their salaries and allowances in light of the challenging economic situation caused by the removal of fuel subsidy.
Removal of the subsidy has increased hardship for citizens, leading to soaring prices of goods and services.
The lawmaker clarified that the speaker, Rep. Tajudeen Abass, did not make any promises regarding the salary and allowance review, as such a decision would need to go through the proper budgetary process.
The legislator, however, explained that the Speaker informed them that the demand was not included in the 2023 budget.
