French President Emmanuel Macron has condemned the coup that ousted Niger’s elected leader, President Mohamed Bazoum, stating that it poses dangers not only for Niger but also for the entire Sahel region.
Macron, speaking during a visit to Papua New Guinea, said it was imperative that the constitutional order be restored and vowed to support regional groupings like ECOWAS in mediation or sanctions against putschists.
He stated, “There is an urgency of restoring constitutional order and the need to release President Bazoum, who has been confined to his residence by his own presidential guard since Wednesday.”
He added that Niger’s government is widely viewed as an important ally in the fight against Islamist militancy in the troubled and vast Sahel region.
Emmanuel mentioned Western powers, including France, to support Niger and maintain its stability, especially in the face of insurgent threats.
The Citizen Reports gathered that the coup has raised concerns about the potential impact on regional security, and it may also jeopardize the presence of French and UN troops in Niger.
