The Kano State Government has directed the immediate dismissal of two senior medical staff of the Ministry of Health for alleged extortion and related offences.

The government had, weeks ago, removed the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) and eight medical doctors in one of the public health centers for negligence to duty.

Spokesperson for Hospital Management Board (HMB), Semeera Sulaiman, said the government directed the CMD and CMO of Abubakar Imam Urology Hospital to step down.

The statement added that HMB appointed Dr. Amiru Yola and Dr. Balarabe Muhd as new CMD and CMO respectively. The new senior officers are to occupy the position in acting capacity to oversee the activities, restore order and sanity, then forward their reports to the Commissioner for Health in three months.

The statement cited a series of allegations ranging from extortion of patients, referral of patients to private facilities for procedures/surgeries as well as financial mismanagement by the public and various agencies.

It reads: “The management has approved the posting of all sub-staff and attendants to other facilities, as well as to make a replacement with other staff from sister facilities and re-assign the Head of Nursing Department with immediate effect.’’

“We pay serious attention to the healthcare system in the state; hence, the decision of the Executive Secretary and Commissioner for Health to join forces in reviving the facilities for standard medical services and ensure all officers and health workers abide by the civil service rules.”
