Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu is set to make his debut appearance at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Tuesday, September 19.

The UN correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria reported that President Tinubu will address the 78th Session of the high-level General Debate at the UN headquarters in New York during the evening session.

Tinubu’s presence marks a key moment, as he becomes the fifth African leader to speak on the first day of the gathering.

The Office of the General Assembly President revealed the order of speakers, positioning Mr. Tinubu as the 14th speaker among the 20 leaders scheduled to address the assembly on the opening day.

The session will see a morning session, during which South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, the 10th speaker, will be the first African leader to address the Assembly.

In the afternoon session, five African leaders, including the Nigerian President, will share their perspectives with world leaders.

President Tinubu’s address is expected around 6 p.m. local time in New York, which corresponds to 11 p.m. Nigerian time.

He will join other African leaders like Algeria’s Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Morocco’s Aziz Akhannouch, and Mozambique’s Filipe Nyusi in the afternoon session lineup.

Traditionally, the session opens with the President of Brazil, Luiz da Sliva, followed by the U.S. President, Joe Biden, as the host country representative.

This year’s UNGA 78 session will commence on Tuesday, September 5, with the inauguration of Trinidad and Tobago’s Dennis Francis as the new President, who will serve for the next 12 months.

The overarching theme of the 78th session and its General Debate revolves around rebuilding trust and reigniting global solidarity by accelerating action on the 2030 Agenda and its sustainable development goals towards peace, prosperity, progress, and sustainability for all.

This central theme emphasizes the global commitment to working collectively to address critical challenges and attain sustainable development objectives by 2030.

The General Debate will take place from September 19 to September 29, fostering dialogue and collaboration among world leaders to shape a better future.
