It was learnt that the accident was caused by excessive speed, and loss of control on the part of the truck driver.

Although 21 persons were involved in the multiple crash, five people died, while 12 others were injured.

The Public Education Officer, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ogun State Command, Florence Okpe, who confirmed the number of casualties, said: “Due to the tyre blowout and loss of control, the truck fell and blocked the road. “The injured people were taken to Victory Hospital, Ogere, for medical attention, while the dead were deposited at a morgue in Ipara community.”

Okpe quoted the Ogun State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Mr Anthony Uga, as advising motorists to desist from using substandard tyres and to also apply sense while driving during this rainy season.

The sector commander sympathized with families of the victims, advising them to visit the Ogunmakin Unit of the FRSC for more information on the accident.

Meanwhile the FRSC has confirmed that one of its personnel was crushed by a Mack Truck which failed to brake around the Orile area of Lagos.

Sanusi said the corpse of the personnel had been deposited in the public mortuary, Yaba. He added that a manhunt had been launched against the fleeing killer driver.
