The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has issued a stern warning of nationwide protests in response to the recent tuition fee hikes in public higher educational institutions across the country.

The association urges the Federal Government to intervene promptly to avert a potential crisis arising from the fee increments.

In a statement by the Senate President of NANS National Headquarters, Sen. Akinteye Babatunde Afeez (BABTEE), the organization unequivocally rejects recent proposals for tuition fee increases, specifically citing instances from the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), and Federal College of Agriculture, Akure (FECA).

TCR gathered that several universities have witnessed protests in response to recent tuition fee adjustments.

NANS emphasizes its commitment to protecting the rights and interests of Nigerian students, expressing concern that despite explicit instructions against tuition fee hikes from the Federal Government, some Vice Chancellors and heads of institutions are seemingly determined to defy these directives.

The statement declares, “If these institutions persist in their disregard for the government’s stance, NANS will mobilize Nigerian students nationwide to stage a relentless protest, stampede, and shut down the country until our demands are met.”

The association asserts that education is a right, not a privilege, and vehemently rejects any policy jeopardizing accessibility to education for the common man.

NANS also calls on the Federal Government to intervene swiftly, ensuring that institutions align with the government’s commitment to affordable and quality education for all.
