The Supreme Court has solidified Abdullahi Sule’s position as the governor of Nasarawa State, dismissing the prior decision by the state election petition tribunal that ousted him from office.

The tribunal initially declared David Ombugadu, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, as the winner of the March 18, 2023 election.

However, the appeals court intervened, reinstating Governor Sule. The appellate court’s ruling noted that the tribunal had erred in relying on the statements of eight PDP witnesses, arguing that their evidence was not presented alongside the petition.

Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, while delivering the lead judgement, asserted that the appeal lacked merit. This decision marks a conclusive chapter in the legal battle surrounding the gubernatorial election, affirming Abdullahi Sule’s electoral victory.

The ruling has elicited varied reactions, with supporters of Governor Sule expressing relief and satisfaction, while followers of David Ombugadu and the PDP are left grappling with disappointment.
