The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the apprehension of 25 individuals in connection with a recent protest in Minna, Niger State.

Reports indicate that the demonstrators, led by Aisha Jibrin, staged a blockade on the Minna-Bada Road and Kpakungu roundabout to voice grievances regarding the soaring food prices in the country.

Wasiu Abiodun, spokesperson for the Niger State Command of the Force, revealed that the police intervened after the protesters refused to clear the road despite persuasion from law enforcement officials and a direct address from Deputy Governor Com. Yakubu Garba.

The situation escalated when the demonstrators turned violent, attacking the police with various weapons and causing damage to property.

Among those arrested were Aisha Jibrin, Fatima Aliyu, and Fatima Isyaku, alongside 22 other individuals found in possession of dangerous weapons. Items seized from the suspects included makeshift barricades, knives, sticks, drugs, and charms.

During questioning, Aisha claimed ignorance regarding the illegality of their actions and alleged that a local youth leader, Hassan, failed to inform the police about the planned protest as promised.

It was gathered that the Commissioner of Police Shawulu Ebenezer Danmamman emphasized the importance of lawful conduct and urged the public to seek proper channels for addressing grievances rather than resorting to violence.

Investigations are ongoing, and the arrested individuals will face prosecution once the process is complete.
