In a tragic incident on Sunday, bandits launched a brazen assault on a police checkpoint situated in Tazame village, Zamfara State.
The targeted checkpoint, located within close proximity to Kwatarkwashi, near the state capital of Gusau, became the scene of violence as assailants, reportedly numbering over 40 and riding motorbikes, executed their attack around 4 am.
Eyewitnesses recounted a harrowing scene where the bandits engaged in a fierce exchange of gunfire with the police personnel stationed at the checkpoint.
TCR learned that despite the valiant efforts of the officers, the overwhelming numbers of the attackers ultimately led to the tragic loss of one policeman’s life, with several others sustaining injuries in the skirmish.
The audacity of the assailants was further demonstrated as they proceeded to ransack the checkpoint, looting and setting fire to valuable items before swiftly fleeing the scene.
It was learned that the sheer disparity in numbers left the remaining policemen with no choice but to retreat for their safety, narrowly escaping a potentially graver outcome.
In the aftermath of the attack, attempts to solicit a response from the Zamfara Police Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Yazid Abubakar, proved futile, as all communication efforts went unanswered.
