President Bola Tinubu has appointed Mrs. Zubaida Umar as the new Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), replacing Mustapha Ahmed, who was appointed by former President Muhammadu Buhari in May 2021.

The announcement, made in a statement titled ‘President Tinubu appoints a new NEMA Director-General,’ emphasises the President’s dedication to gender inclusion, as highlighted by the Presidency’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale.

With over 20 years of experience in Human Resources, Finance, and Administration, Umar brings a wealth of expertise to her new role.

She is a member of the Chartered Institute of Bankers and the Institute of Credit Administration, holding ACCA certifications in Public Financial Management and Digital & Sustainability Financing.

During her tenure as Executive Director of Finance and Corporate Services at the Federal Mortgage Bank, Umar played a pivotal role in modernizing the institution into a digitally-driven mortgage and financial service provider.

In his statement, Ngelale expressed the President’s expectations for Umar to instill financial and operational discipline within NEMA.

The President envisions a transformation of the agency into a proactive and performance-driven emergency response provider, focusing on prevention and climate change readiness.

Umar’s appointment signifies a strategic move towards enhancing emergency response capabilities and aligning NEMA’s mandate with contemporary challenges such as climate change and disaster prevention.

As she assumes her new role, Umar’s leadership is poised to steer NEMA towards greater efficiency and effectiveness in serving the nation during emergencies.
