Dr. Abdulrazak Ibrahim, a Nigerian scholar and agricultural biotechnologist, has devised an insect control technology, bolstering crop protection efforts in Brazil.
His invention, born out of collaboration in an African-Brazil project, marks the establishment of the first-ever biolistic facility in Northern Nigeria.
Inspired by Professor Funso Sonaiya of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ibrahim embarked on a journey into science, technology, and innovation pathways, ultimately leading to the development of a solution that has saved farmers from significant crop wastage.
With patents secured through the Brazilian Industrial Property Organisation, Ibrahim’s innovation has emerged as a critical shield against the menace of insect infestations, preventing substantial losses in the South American country’s potential food production.
“Ibrahim’s invention has been instrumental in averting a crisis, ensuring that Brazil retains a substantial portion of its agricultural output,” said agricultural experts.
With over two decades of experience within Africa’s National Agricultural Research and Innovation System (NARIS), South America, and the Tropical Agriculture Platform (TAP) framework, Ibrahim’s expertise spans various domains, including capacity development, agricultural innovation systems (AIS), and stakeholder engagement.
His academic achievements include a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from the Universidade de Brasilia (UnB), Brazil; a master’s degree in Biochemistry from Universidade Federal do Ceara (UFC), Fortaleza, Brazil, and a BSc degree in Biochemistry from Bayero University, Kano, Nigeria.
Ibrahim’s proficiency extends to the development of transgenic crops, laboratory and field management of GM crops, biosafety protocols, and foresight strategies, positioning him as a leading figure in agricultural research and development.
Through his contributions, Ibrahim exemplifies the power of collaboration and innovation in addressing critical agricultural challenges, ensuring food security for nations across continents.
