The immediate past governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, has disclosed that the Federal Government is currently spending more on fuel subsidy than previously.
Speaking to newsmen in Maiduguri after delivering the lead paper at a workshop, El-Rufai said, “The federal government is now subsidizing fuel; many people don’t know this.”
He further elaborated on the situation, adding that, “It is a right policy. I have always supported the withdrawal of oil subsidy; but in the course of implementing the policy, the government realised that subsidy has to be back; right now, government is paying a lot of money for subsidy, even more than before.”
El-Rufai also noted the importance of pragmatism in leadership, adding that policies may need modifications when faced with challenges during implementation.
“You start implementing a policy because you are absolutely sure it is the right policy, but in the course of implementation, you come across bottlenecks, and you modify,” he noted.
In addition to discussing fuel subsidy, El-Rufai also commented on the critics of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
He stated, “It is too early to judge the present administration. It (the Tinubu administration) has been there just for nine months now.“
