After spending 27 months in detention, suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police Abba Kyari was greeted with a heartwarming welcome from his loved ones on Friday upon his release from the Kuje Custodial Centre.

Videos and images circulating on social media show Kyari surrounded by family members, with balloon decorations and a “Welcome Back” banner in the background.

His arrest in February 2022 by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for alleged involvement in an international drug cartel led to his detention.

Following the death of his mother, Yachilla Kyari, on May 5, Kyari was granted bail to complete her burial rites. As part of his bail conditions, he must surrender his passport and report to the nearest NDLEA office.

The court has scheduled a hearing on Kyari’s primary bail application for drug trafficking charges for May 31, 2024.
