The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have suspended their industrial action for one week, following a joint extraordinary national executive council meeting held in Abuja on Tuesday.

According to Festus Osifo, President of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), “A joint NEC meeting of TUC/NLC has approved to relax the industrial action for one week with immediate effect.”

The labour unions had embarked on strike action on Monday to protest the hike in electricity tariff and the lack of consensus on a new minimum wage.

The strike had far-reaching impacts on various sectors of the economy, with schools, businesses, hospitals, and airports shutting down. The national grid was also shut down, leaving the nation in darkness.

A communique is expected to be issued shortly, Osifo confirmed.

This development indicates a temporary reprieve in the standoff between the labour unions and the government, as negotiations continue on the minimum wage and electricity tariff issues.
