Minimum Wage Strike Ends as Govt, Labour Reach Agreement

The nationwide strike action that began on June 3, 2024, has come to an end following a landmark agreement reached between the Federal Government and organised labour on the minimum wage.

According to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, the government has agreed to pay a minimum wage higher than the previously proposed N60,000.

Akume also assured that no worker would be victimised for participating in the strike.

The national tripartite committee on minimum wage will meet daily for the next week to finalise the details of the agreement.

Both labour leaders and government officials are optimistic that this agreement will bring a swift end to the strike and restore normalcy to the country.

The strike, which began on June 3, had significantly impacted economic activities, forcing numerous businesses to shut down.

The newly reached agreement is widely regarded as a positive development, and many are hopeful that it will mark the end of the strike and pave the way for the country’s return to normalcy.
