President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria has extended his congratulations to Claudia Sheinbaum on her historic election as Mexico’s first female president.
In a statement released by his spokesman, Ajuri Ngelale, President Tinubu praised Sheinbaum’s victory, saying it has “cemented the voices of women in government and broken the political glass ceiling.”
Sheinbaum, a 61-year-old scientist and former Mexico City mayor, won the election with an impressive 58-60% of votes, according to official results from the National Electoral Institute.
Her closest rival, Xochitl Galvez, conceded defeat, trailing by over 30 percentage points.
President Tinubu’s statement also expressed his desire to strengthen bilateral ties between Nigeria and Mexico in areas of mutual interest.
Sheinbaum’s popularity is attributed to the support of outgoing President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, her mentor and fellow leftist, who has an approval rating exceeding 60% but is limited to a single term in office.
This development marks a significant milestone in Mexico’s political history and a major victory for women in politics.
