In a bid to curb illicit oil refining and smuggling in the Niger Delta region, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has launched a series of aerial attacks on illegal refining sites and boats in Rivers, Bayelsa, and Imo states.
The NAF’s Air Component of Operation Delta Safe conducted the airstrikes between June 18 and June 22, destroying 13 illegal refining sites and 7 boats.
According to AVM Edward Gabkwet, the NAF spokesperson, the air interdictions also disrupted the activities of oil thieves, scattering 5 J-5 buses attempting to siphon crude oil products from surface tanks.
Gabkwet hailed the operation as a resounding success, attributing it to enhanced intelligence gathering, improved air-to-ground coordination, and the NAF’s increased agility and resilience.
The NAF’s sustained campaign against oil thieves aims to stem the tide of illegal oil refining and smuggling in the region, which has plagued the country for years.
