The Federal Government has announced a 150-day duty-free import window for essential food items, including maize, wheat, husked brown rice, and cowpeas.

It was reported that the move, is part of the Presidential Accelerated Stabilization and Advancement Plan, aims to address food inflation and ensure no citizen goes to bed hungry.

According to the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, the government has been working tirelessly to address the food crisis, which has seen prices skyrocket to unprecedented levels.

He said, “The Federal Government has announced a 150-day Duty-Free Import Window for Food Commodities, suspension of duties, tariffs and taxes for the importation of certain food commodities (through land and sea borders). These commodities include maize, husked brown rice, wheat and cowpeas.

The imported food commodities will be subjected to a Recommended Retail Price (RRP) to ensure safety and affordability.

In addition to private sector imports, the Federal Government will import 250,000MT of wheat and 250,000MT of maize, targeting small-scale processors and millers across the country.

The move, however, is expected to help stabilize food prices and ensure availability.

Meanwhile, the government has also inaugurated the Renewed Hope National Livestock Transformation Implementation Committee to develop and implement policies prioritizing livestock development and aligning with the National Livestock Transformation Plan.

The Citizen Reports gathered that the committee will work to ensure the country’s livestock sector is developed and transformed to meet the needs of citizens.
