The Governor of Kano State, Abba Yusuf, has declared that his administration will not tolerate any groups suspected of promoting or advocating for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) rights within the state.

This directive comes amid rising tensions over alleged activities by groups promoting same-sex marriage in Kano.

The state’s Commissioner for Information, Baba Dantiye, addressed these concerns during a press briefing on Sunday in Kano.

Dantiye conveyed the government’s stance, noting that any agreement promoting LGBT activities is unacceptable as it contradicts the cultural and moral values of the Kano people.

“The state government will not accept any agreement that promotes the activities of gays and lesbians, as it contravenes the norms and values of the people of Kano and breaches the state’s moral standards,” Dantiye stated.

The governor has instructed the Hisbah Board to take action against groups advocating for LGBT rights.

Dantiye highlighted the governor’s firm position: “I spoke with the governor, and he expressed his disapproval of the said agreement, even though it has not yet been confirmed. He assured me that there is no room for LGBT activities in Kano.”

Dantiye stressed the significant role of religion in Kano’s societal norms, noting that “98% of Kano’s population are Muslims by faith, and our religion is against this immorality, so we can’t accept it.”

In response to citizen concerns about groups allegedly promoting LGBT activities, the commissioner said that the Hisbah Board has been directed to investigate and act accordingly.

“The governor has ordered Hisbah to investigate and take action against these groups,” he said.

The state government is also engaging with religious leaders to devise strategies to prevent such activities.

Dantiye added, “We also discussed this with the governor, and he directed Hisbah to investigate and crack down on them. We will take legal action as appropriate.”
