In a significant move, President Bola Tinubu announced the creation of the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development on Tuesday.

The announcement came during the inauguration of the Renewed Hope Livestock Reform Implementation Committee at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Although the President did not reveal the name of the minister for the new ministry, it is expected that he will forward a nominee to the Senate for screening and confirmation.

The inauguration was attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Secretary to the Government of the Federation Senator George Akume, Chief of Staff to the President Femi Gbajabiamila, and other cabinet members.

TCR learned that this development follows the establishment of a presidential committee on September 15, 2023, aimed at reforming the livestock industry and finding lasting solutions to the recurring conflicts between herders and farmers in Nigeria.

The committee’s formation was a response to the recommendations of the National Conference on Livestock Reforms and Mitigation of Associated Conflicts in Nigeria.
