The Benue State House of Assembly has embarked on a mission to simplify burial practices within the state, aiming to curb the increasingly extravagant and costly traditions.

TCR gathered that the House passed a motion urging the Benue State Traditional Council to actively educate the public about the downsides of exorbitant funeral expenses. R

Raphael Akume, Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, confirmed the move in a statement.

The motion, introduced by Deputy Chief Whip Berger Alfred Emberga, argued that the current situation demanded action.

Emberga highlighted the issue’s persistent neglect despite frequent discussion within religious circles.

“The Tiv people, historically, observed simple and dignified burial rites,” the motion stated.

“They mourned and buried their dead within three days, incurring minimal expenses for food, drinks, or elaborate tombs and caskets.”

The lawmakers unanimously approved the motion’s proposals, calling upon the Benue State Traditional Councils to do the needful.
